Three Categories of Universities in Florida

Added: 12/12/2005

All Florida universities fall into one of three broad categories: private and independent institutions, public community colleges, and the state university system. The criteria differentiating them is determined by the source of funding. The universities of each category have multiple campus locations, diverse structures and offer a number of degree programs to their students.

The private sector of universities in Florida is best represented by the Florida Institute of Technology, New College of Florida, and the Schiller International University.  Founded in 1958, under the name of Brevard Engineering College, the Florida Institute of Technology acquired its present name in 1966. The curriculum of the university is based on the various engineering fields. The majority of the university's employees are recognized leaders in their fields.  Florida Institute of Technology has an enrollment of 2,300 undergraduate and 2,400 graduate students, who are offered education in the Colleges of Engineering, Aeronautics, Science, Business, Psychology and Liberal Arts, and the School of Extended Graduate Studies.  Schiller International University, which is located in Dunedin, Florida, is composed of eight campuses in six countries, London, England; Madrid, Spain; Paris and Strasbourg, France; Heidelberg, Germany; and Leysin and Engelberg, Switzerland. Founded as a study-abroad program, the university now offers undergraduate and graduate education to students from 100 countries worldwide. It makes itself conspicuous among the universities in Florida due to its uniqueness: the students of the university have the possibility to transfer from one campus to another, yet remaining within the same university.

The Florida Community College at Jacksonville belongs to the group of Florida public community colleges. It comprises five campuses, including the North Campus, South Campus, Kent Campus and Downtown Campus, and has the same number of additional centers. The Advanced Technology Center is used for teaching technical topics like automobile repair, natural science and network technology.  The Urban Resource Center is seen as a center of distant learning.

The system of state universities in Florida includes eleven Florida colleges and universities, the most prominent of which are Florida A&M University, Florida Atlantic University and Florida State University.  Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University, referred to as Florida A&M, belongs to the group of historically black colleges and universities.  The student population consists primarily of undergraduate students. Eleven schools and colleges of the university offer 62 Bachelor's degrees, 36 Master's degrees, 11 PhD degree programs and 2 professional degrees.  The notable alumni of the university include Bob Hayes, a football player; Kwame Kilpatrick, Mayor of Detroit; T'Keyah Crystal Keymah, actress, and others.

Florida Atlantic University is a public institution of higher education, located in Boca Raton, Florida. As of 2004, it had an enrollment of 26,000 students, offered over 170 Bachelor's, Master's and Doctoral degree programs within eight colleges of the university: Charles E. Schmidt College of Science, Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters, College of Education, College of Engineering and Computer Science, College of Nursing, College of Architecture, College of Business and Harriet Wilkes Honors College. One of the largest education programs in the nation, the Lifelong Learning Society, is run by the university, which brings FAU to the leading position among universities in Florida.
